Principal’s Report at the 35th Annual Speech Day

Date: 01/12/2017

Guest of Honour Secretary for Education Mr. Kevin YEUNG, Supervisor Ms. LAM, School Managers, Distinguished Guests, Parents, Teachers and Students,

Good afternoon. It is our great honour to have Mr. YEUNG to officiate here at our celebrations today.

The Education Theme for the year 2016-2017 was “Fostering Proactive Learning and Values in a Caring Community”. We aim at inspiring our students to be high achievers in all-round development. We would like to show our gratitude to the Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club for their support on our Joint School Staff Development Day, and their subsidies for teachers and students’ expenses on study tours.

The Learning Support Grant and the Career Life Planning Grant were fully utilized to hold different kind of programmes and activities to promote students’ personal growth and inter-personal relationships. In our school-based curriculum, we continued to provide step-up programmes for high achievers in senior forms. After-school learning support programmes were also arranged at junior levels and a group teaching strategy was adopted in teaching the four core subjects from S4 to S6.

In line with our school’s long tradition, students were encouraged to participate in various school and community services, like the CYC and Ming Yue elderly services. Students had valuable experiences through study tours to Qianhai, Tainan and Osaka, Kyoto and Kyushu in Japan where their cultural horizons and general knowledge were broadened.

In the last academic year, fund-raising events, such as the Walkathon, NOVA Alumni Performance, Casual Wear School Day and 30th Anniversary School Band Concert were held. These events and others will continue to be held to raise the HKD25million top up funding needed for the school redevelopment project. We would like to express our gratitude to all donors for their generosity towards this project.

In the 2017 HKDSE examination, of the subjects taken, the average subject pass rate of 134 Secondary 6 students was 99.7%. 88.8% students attained the minimum university admission requirement of ‘33222’. The highest level 4+ subject was Biology at 84.9%. English Language and Liberal Studies followed with 82.1% and 81.3% respectively. 98% of our S6 graduates were admitted to local, overseas universities and other tertiary institutions. 76% were offered degree courses.

Our students actively participated in various inter-school competitions and the results here were also pleasing. We won more than 400 individual and group prizes in the last academic year.

A team of six S5 students won the championship of “2016-2017年度水耕種植設施設計比賽” organized by the Hydroponic Society. LING Cheuk Man Chapman (4C) was awarded the First Honour Prize and our school the Best School Award in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2017. CHAN Kelvin Cheuk Kwan (2A) and LEUNG Kam Ming (2A) won the First Honour Prize of the 2016-17 Hong Kong Junior Mathematics Olympiad.

Three of our students CHAN Shuk Man (6C), FUNG Kwan Yin (5E), and GUO Yangling (5E) were honoured with the 2016-2017 Ten Outstanding Youths of the Eastern District Award. NG Yu Ching (6A) received the Top Ten Outstanding Student Award in the Senior Section organized by the Hong Kong Island School Heads Association.

You may refer to the 2016-2017 Annual Report and the Speech Day Bulletin for a more complete picture of our students’ achievements in Mathematics, Science, the Speech Festival, orienteering and athletics competitions.

We would like to thank all who helped us achieve our educational goals. Despite the unforseen challenges ahead, our school will continue to grow sustainably and to achieve further progress in the future. Lastly, we hope our school redevelopment project can proceed according to schedule so as to further benefit our students’ learning and development.

Thank you!
